On Noticing a Subtle Shift in Sapporo

Japan is a place I hold deep affection for. Over the past thirty-odd years, I've visited well over a hundred times, exploring its length and breadth. My love for the country is built on its beautiful landscapes, the systems I admire, its rich culture, and—most importantly—its people. I've always been fascinated by the distinct character of different cities. In Tokyo or Osaka, the efficiency and politeness are impeccable, though sometimes tinged with a necessary commercial briskness. In places like Sapporo and Nagoya, I've traditionally felt a more immediate, authentic warmth—a genuine sense of welcome.

Visiting Hokkaido every winter to snowboard, often in Niseko, has been a cherished ritual for me. A brief stop in Sapporo, one of my most beloved cities, was always a highlight. I returned in January 2026 with the same anticipation. This time, however, I sensed something—or rather, someone—slightly different. I am unsure if this stems from the pressures of overtourism, broader global tensions, or simply the passage of time. But the feeling was distinct: while I believe I approached with the same open-hearted curiosity, the reception felt altered.

I write this from a particular perspective—as someone from Hong Kong. A decade or so ago, we experienced a similar, palpable shift during a period of intense overtourism. The sudden influx changed the daily rhythm of the city, and at times, the fatigue and pressure showed in interactions that were once consistently warm. It gives me a frame of reference, and perhaps a dose of empathy, for what might be happening elsewhere.

I am a sentimental person who values human connection. I often chat with strangers in shops and restaurants, finding joy in these small, fleeting exchanges. It is from this perspective that I share two contrasting experiences from the same hour in the basement food hall of Mitsukoshi in Susukino.

At the first counter, 「庵兆吉源」 , my simple purchase of two boxes of biscuits unfolded unusually. The salesperson, professional in appearance, fulfilled the request mechanically. Her demeanor was closed, almost displeased. In my usual manner, I gently asked if she was having a difficult day, hoping to offer a moment of kindness. There was no reply. Instead, she turned her back to pack the items, simultaneously laughing and chatting with a colleague. The dismissal was palpable and, frankly, unexpected in Sapporo. It was not about the lack of a smile, but the presence of an active indifference that felt incongruent with the service culture I have long associated with Japan.

Seeking a different atmosphere, I moved to the next counter, 「Juchheim」 . Here, the experience was a return to what I have always cherished. A staff member named 「野表」 not only patiently explained each product but did so with the warm, attentive smile I remember. She carefully wrapped the purchases, suggested a tax refund for all my items, and handled everything with proactive care. It was a seamless, positive interaction that felt genuinely welcoming.

This stark contrast within minutes was illuminating. It felt like a momentary glimpse into heaven and hell in the realm of customer service.

My purpose in sharing this is not to condemn, but to reflect. For businesses and staff, it is a reminder that the core of service—especially in a place renowned for it—lies in respectful, human engagement. The transaction is secondary to the momentary human connection. For visitors like myself, it is a reminder to meet each interaction without presumption, to maintain our own courtesy regardless of the reception.

Japan, and Sapporo in particular, still has my heart. The perfect service at 「Juchheim」 proves the spirit I love endures. I share this observation hoping it underscores a simple truth: in travel, in business, in human interaction, respect and authentic presence are the true souvenirs we should all strive to give and receive.

Great food court on the bottom floor, literally you can find anything you want there. From fresh fish, seafood, meats, vegetables, traditional Japanese ingredients, etc. a great place to buy presents because it's also close to the train station. Plus, the top floor is a beautiful rooftop with a botanic store to buy.plants, an organized place to sit and eat, and just relax.

One of the better department store in Sapporo for your tax free shopping needs subject to a minimum spend of 5000 yen. It carries a wide variety of Ladies and men clothing ,bags, shoes etc.as well exclusive designer brands . In the basement lies a gourmet's paradise, offering an overwhelming choice of mochi, sweets and condiments as well as typical japanese cuisine like ramen and sushi .The basement is crowded during peak lunch hours so be prepared to wait awhile at the cashier for payment. Recommended stop for your next shopping trip!
