Hayashi Shoten

I absolutely love this restaurant and have been back a few times since I first went in the summer of 2024.

The restaurant space is small, but comfortable. The interior design is very charming and the owner often partners with a local artist to hold month-long exhibitions.

The menu has a couple dozen dishes and I have had most of them. I highly recommend the mac and cheese and the Pad Thai. The mac and cheese is the best I've ever had--apologies to my friends who also make really good mac and cheese. The Pad Thai comes with a four condiments on the side, each altering the dish in a unique way and yet each version is incredibly tasty. I would also shout out the ceviche and scallion pancake.

The restaurant also boasts a curated collection of craft beer. My favorite are Vedett and Chimay, both Belgians.

Because the restaurant is small and seems to be popular, I would recommend making a reservation on Hot Pepper.

The restaurant also offers course meals to parties of 3 or more. I have only come with my fiancee so I am unable to comment on their courses. There is also a bar where individuals or small parties can sit.

For Anglophone travelers, the menu has enough English and pictures to be able to order comfortably.

I highly recommend Hayashi Shoten and can't wait to go back!

This restaurant was one of the highlights of our stay in Sapporo.
The owner was lovely, we met his entire family! A great story of two brothers travelling the world bringing different cuisines back to Sapporo. We had the lunchtime menu it was scrumptious.
Only thing we’d ask for was more protein in the bowls. It was delicious and we definitely wanted more of it!

It was a pretty good experience and I’d definitely go back. It has that quiet intimate feel to the place, making it a pretty good date spot or a small group to catch up with a drink and finger food. Their rice plate is the way to go here! But if you’re feeling like something less heavy, all their food on the menu was above par. However, avoid the nachos if you’re expecting something like you used to have in other countries, because it’s more artisanal than hitting that cheesy spot.

Food were tastefully rendered, and the owners were very hospitable. The family-run izakaya is ornamented with curated articles from all around the world, and promotes travel. We ordered pad Thai, Massaman curry, side dishes fish and chips, sausages, all are very delicately done.

A little gem in Hokkaido city that is worth paying a visit to.

Food was great. The owner was welcoming to foreigners and we were happy to be able to enjoy having our dinner there.
